What does 'Haram' source mean?

Haram, an Arabic term meaning “forbidden” or “unlawful,” refers to investments that violate Islamic principles according to Shariah law. In the investment context, haram specifically encompasses financial activities involving interest (riba), excessive uncertainty (gharar), gambling-like speculation (maysir), or companies with significant debt levels. Additionally, investments in prohibited industries such as alcohol, gambling, tobacco, pork products, conventional banking, weapons manufacturing, and certain entertainment sectors are considered haram.

Naushad Virji

Chief Executive Officer

Naushad Virji is the CEO of SP Funds Management and Chairman of the ShariaPortfolio Group of Companies. ShariaPortfolio is a leader in offering comprehensive Sharia-compliant investment solutions around the world. Naushad founded ShariaPortfolio in the USA in 2003, led the expansion into Canada in 2017 and started working with global clients in 2020. He is also one of the portfolio managers for the SP Funds line of Sharia-compliant exchange traded funds (ETFs).

Naushad is a frequent speaker and contributor to various news media around the world on the topic of Sharia-compliant investment management. In 2019, Naushad was honored with the distinction of being one of the 500 most prominent and influential Muslims in the world by Islamica 500.

Prior to launching ShariaPortfolio, Naushad managed a hedge fund. He has also been the manager of several real estate partnerships. From the beginning, it’s been Naushad’s focus to offer professionally managed investment solutions to help the Muslim community achieve their financial goals without compromising their personal values.

Naushad received his degree from the University of Florida and then passed the exam to become a licensed investment advisor representative so he could start his own firm. Naushad was born in Italy but has lived in Florida since 1975.

Glenn Vitale

Chief Financial Officer

Glenn is the CFO of the SP Trust and is a member of board. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Florida and a Certified Specialist in Estate Planning by profession. He is sole principal & shareholder of Glenn M. Vitale, CPA, P.A., which was established in Altamonte Springs, FL in 1999. Glenn Vitale’s practice provides services in financial consulting, business, personal & fiduciary taxation and planning, along with corporate & individual taxation & planning. The firm also offers trustee and trust administration services along with asset protection and estate planning. Mr. Vitale attended Florida Atlantic University where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration with a Major in Accounting. He completed the required curriculum to earn the designation “Certified Specialist in Estate Planning” and completed the required curriculum for the Master Analyst in Financial Forensics and Certified Valuation Analyst. Glenn Vitale has over 15 years experience in corporate accounting & financial management, two years experience in financial services related sales and over 30 years’ experience in public accounting. His corporate background included managerial positions held with both publicly held companies and closely-held businesses with market concentrations in real estate construction & development. Glenn Vitale is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the National Alliance of Trust & Estate Professionals. Mr. Vitale also served as Treasurer and Board Member of the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc. and the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando Foundation, Inc.

Haroon Sheikh

Chief Operating Officer

Haroon serves as Chief Operating Officer at SP Funds and has been a passive leader within the ShariaPortfolio Group of Companies since 2014.
A seasoned technology executive, Haroon brings 25 years of software development experience from Apple, where he served as a software architect and technical manager specializing in graphics and animation technologies. His contributions spanned landmark projects including macOS and iOS development, with notable involvement in the original iPhone and iPad product launches.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Haroon has provided strategic counsel and support to numerous non-profit organizations in areas including philanthropic initiatives, business development, and financial planning. His non-profit engagement has encompassed civil rights and liberties advocacy, digital media and film production, and investigative journalism.
Haroon holds a Master’s degree in Computer Graphics from the University of Waterloo. Having lived in the Middle East, Canada, and California, he has been based in Florida since 2010.

Imran Virji

Investor Services Representative

Imran Virji is an undergraduate student studying at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities pursuing a BA in economics. He has achieved a diverse perspective on business and education whilst living in various locations throughout the United States as well as in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Imran’s interest in finance was curated by his interactions with family and friends who happen to be business minded or studied finance and/or business.

Receptionist

With an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration, Molly Persaud brings two decades of experience in the Elementary Education field to her current role as a Receptionist at SP Funds. Throughout her career, she has dedicated herself to serving others, embodying a strong commitment to her community and her family.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Molly enjoys spending quality time with her family and grandchildren, cherishing every moment and making memories. Her life philosophy centers around the values of service, providing for her loved ones, and embracing new opportunities as they come.

Sales Manager

Naeem Randhawa is a Sales Manager with SP Funds and an Executive Board Member
with SP Funds. Naeem has more than 20 years of experience in management consulting working at Big 4 firms including KPMG, Bearingpoint, Deloitte and Grant Thornton. He has led large multi-site projects with Fortune 1000 clients, including VMware, Dell, Pepsi, Boeing, FedEx and more.
Naeem is a frequent speaker and is an Amazon best-selling author on entrepreneurship. In 2018 and 2019, Naeem was honored with the distinction of being one of the 500 most prominent and influential Muslims in the world by Islamica 500, for creating the first Halal crowdfunding platform for real estate investors.
Prior to ShariaPortfolio, Naeem partnered in many successful businesses including FedEx franchises, commercial real estate investments, top 1% Amazon selling partner, and other startups. Naeem received his Bachelor of Engineering degree (BSEE) from Montreal, and recently relocated from Kuala Lumpur to Dallas, Texas.

Fatema Alidina

Executive Assistant to CEO

Fatema Alidina graduated the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2010 with Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Communication, and Sociology. She worked at Omnicom Media Group as a Strategist before joining ShariaPortfolio, USA in 2014 where she worked as a Marketing Associate and Client Services Manager. Fatema rejoined SP Funds as the Executive Assistant to Naushad Virji in 2019. With communication, professionalism, and faith at the heart of her career, Fatema considers herself a chameleon and has the ability to seamlessly contribute to many different aspects of SP Funds’ sprawling brand. In her spare time, Fatema enjoys yoga, traveling, and spending time with her three children.

Sameer Gulamhussein is a dedicated financial professional currently serving as a Bookkeeper at SP Funds, North America’s largest family of Sharia-compliant funds. With a global background in banking and credit analysis, including key roles at institutional banks such as Emirates Islamic Bank, Sameer brings a wealth of experience and a meticulous approach to financial record-keeping and reporting. His strong foundation in both Islamic and conventional finance ensures the accurate maintenance of accounts in line with SP Funds’ commitment to ethical and socially responsible investing.

Siraj Sohail

Esq. Attorney

Siraj is a cum laude graduate of Western Michigan University Cooley Law School. While in law school, Siraj clerked for the IRS Office of Chief Counsel and worked on drafting legislation for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation along with interning in the Elder Law Clinic where he drafted wills, trusts, and other estate planning documents for clients of the Clinic.

After graduating and passing the Florida bar, Siraj worked for many years in higher education working on a wide variety of regulatory, compliance, and Department of Education matters on behalf of the university he was employed at. Siraj partnered with

Zubair Dawood in 2017 to form Dawood Sohail Law PLLC. The firm’s practice areas include corporate law, real estate law, estate planning, probate, and immigration law.

Siraj is fluent in English, Arabic, and Urdu.

Siraj is an undergraduate student working toward an MBA with a scholarship at Rollins
College. Though having spent a few years in Vancouver, Canada, he has spent most of
his life living in Orlando, Florida. Siraj also volunteers as a member of his mosque’s outreach team, coordinating events and writing articles.

Having extensive experience with a myriad of coffee machines, Siraj is equipped with all the skills necessary to produce a colleagues morning latte in a timely manner. All jokes aside, as he works on the organizational aspects of the company, Siraj is an attentive and diligent worker dedicated to growing as an asset in his role.

Zubair Dawood

Esq. Attorney

Zubair, a graduate of the University of Florida Levin College of Law, is a seasoned businessman with decades of experience managing and growing multi-million dollarbusinesses. A Zubair served as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Renee Roche, 9th Judicial Circuit, in Orange County, Florida. Most recently, Zubair clerked at a large law firm and primarily focused his practice in immigration law. Zubair also consults with medical practices to offer legal and business advice.
